Perhaps you have heard of orthotics but you are unsure exactly what they are or what they do. You may be looking at various ways to improve your running generally. This may lead you to ask the question: can orthotics improve my running? The answer is: they might be able to help depending on your circumstances. Let’s explore further.
How do orthotics work?
Foot orthoses (orthotics) work by changing the alignment of the bones in your feet and ankle into a more comfortable and functional position. When this is done, unbalanced muscle groups become more balanced, and strain on tendons and ligaments is reduced.
If the foot is already in a neutral and balanced position, orthotics will not have as much of an impact as they would on someone with, for example, a heavily pronated (rolled-in) foot. Most people, however, will find at least a slight improvement in their foot function when using custom orthotics. This improvement can also flow-on to your running ability.
How can orthotics improve my running?
Orthotics will usually improve running in one of three ways:
- Better muscle recruitment – ankles, knees and hips will be placed in the neutral position when running, which allows for more effective muscle recruitment and use. Essentially, there is less wasted energy.
- Better endurance – because your gait becomes more efficient, less energy is required to travel the same distance, so you may find after a time that your running endurance is slightly improved.
- Reduced injury/pain – overworked and overstretched muscles, tendons and ligaments are painful and prone to injury. By realigning your lower limbs, we will reduce some of the load and stretch placed on overworked structures, reducing levels of pain and reducing the chance of soft tissue damage.
How do I get orthotics?
If you think orthotics may be able to help you, the first step is to see a podiatrist for an initial assessment. From here your podiatrist can assess your gait and prescribe customised orthotics to suit your individual needs.
