Hypermobility is a relatively common condition that affects children across Brisbane, Mount Isa and beyond. At Advance Foot Clinic Podiatry, our experienced team of podiatrists have helped many children with hypermobility lead active, pain-free lives.
Hypermobility in children refers to joints that move beyond the normal range for their age. Sometimes called “double-jointedness,” hypermobility can affect just a few joints or be more widespread throughout the body. While flexibility is usually considered a positive trait, excessive joint movement can cause discomfort, instability, and fatigue in growing kids.
In most cases, hypermobility is benign and part of a child’s natural development. However, for some, it may be associated with pain, poor coordination, or ongoing injuries—this is when podiatry support becomes important.
The symptoms of hypermobility can vary depending on the severity and which joints are affected. Common signs include:
If your child has multiple of these signs, a podiatric assessment is recommended.
Hypermobility is often inherited. If you or another family member were “bendy” or had flexible joints as a child, there’s a good chance your child may be as well.
Some underlying causes include:
In rare cases, hypermobility may be associated with connective tissue disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Our podiatrists will assess whether referral to a paediatrician or physiotherapist is needed.
At Advance Foot Clinic, our goal is to support your child’s mobility, confidence, and comfort. Treatment is tailored to your child’s symptoms, activity levels and goals. It may include:
Supportive, structured shoes are essential for kids with hypermobility. We’ll help you choose shoes that reduce joint strain and improve stability during walking and play.
Soft or semi-rigid orthotics can help correct foot posture, reduce pain, and improve alignment. Orthotics are especially helpful if your child has flat feet or rolling ankles.
We may prescribe simple, kid-friendly exercises to improve strength, coordination and stability. These are often fun and easy to do at home.
We’ll advise on ways to keep your child active while avoiding overuse injuries—like spacing out sports, using rest breaks, and avoiding high-impact activity during pain flares.
If other concerns are identified, such as widespread joint hypermobility or developmental delay, we may refer to a paediatric physiotherapist, occupational therapist, or paediatrician for further care.
Hypermobility doesn’t have to hold your child back. With early support and the right treatment, many kids thrive in school, sports, and everyday activities. Our podiatrists are here to guide you through every step—from assessment to long-term care.
