Richie Brace
A Richie Brace is a revolutionary type AFO (Ankle-foot orthoses). An AFO is a type of orthotic designed to support the ankle joint. AFOs help with a range of gait problems like foot-drop and ankle instability. The Brace was originally developed by a sports podiatrist Dr Doug Richie.
Why we recommend the Richie Brace
The Richie brace is a unique type of AFO. It is a modern and comfortable device which is often favoured by patients. As prescribing clinicians, we also prefer the Richie Brace.
The brace has a unique design which does not cover the back of the ankle. Combined with lightweight materials, this makes the brace more comfortable than traditional style AFOs. The sprung design also allows for efficient gait with stored energy return. We like how mobile this can make our patients.
4 Key Benefits of the Richie Brace
There’s a number of advantages of the Richie Brace style of AFO. As AFO prescribers, our podiatrists have gravitated towards prescribing the brace almost exclusively because of the following benefits:
Adjustable range of motion
The unique hinged ankle design allows for motion at the ankle joint to be adjusted to suit the patient. It can be sprung for a flick up of the foot or kept more rigid.
Takes up less room in shoes
As it is a more slimline device it is easier to fit into shoes. Shoes do not need to be as wide and deep as when accommodating a traditional AFO.
Lightweight and Breathable
The Richie Brace uses lightweight and breathable materials. There is less plastic enclosing the legs allowing for better airflow and comfort. Very important in Queensland summer!
Richie Brace can fit in sandals
The flexible design allows the orthotic footbed to fit into a wider range of shoes. This includes “orthotic friendly” sandals and casual shoes.
Conditions the Richie Brace is used for
The brace is used to treat a range of conditions. Most notably it is an effective treatment for “Foot Drop”. Anytime the stability of the ankle joint or muscle weakness affects gait a brace is useful. Some examples of such conditions include:
- Motor neuron conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy
- Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (adult acquired flat foot)
- Severe hypermobility
- Chronic ankle instability
- Post-stroke

Step 2 Biomechanical and casting appointment
This is when we will take a negative plaster cast of your lower leg and ankle. You should wear comfortable clothing that allows for access to your lower legs.
Step 3 Podiatrist completes prescription
Your podiatrist will take the results of the assessments and use them to complete a prescription. The Richie Brace is a custom device designed just for you.
Step 4 Brace/s are made
There is a 4-6 week wait while the lab receives, processes and makes your brace according to the podiatrist’s prescription.
Step 5 Dispense appointment
Your podiatrist will fit the brace to your feet and footwear. They will assess your gait and make sure the device is working properly.
Step 6 Review appointment
2-4 weeks after receiving your brace it is essential you return for a review appointment. Any problems or needed adjustments will be addressed by the podiatrist.
